authentic male POV, so when I saw my publishing pal Vincent Morrone wrote from a girl's POV in his debut novel, I decided it was time to turn the tables on that question. And here's what he had to say:
One question that I keep getting asked is
about how I as a male author came up with an authentic voice for a female main
character. Or in other words, how does a dude write a chick?
The funny thing is that while I was
writing it, it didn’t seem strange. After all, unless you’re writing the next
installment of Lord of the Flies, you’re going to have both male and female
characters. You need to be able to make them all sound authentic.
Plus I’ve had plenty of exposure to women
throughout my life. (No, I’m not a stud.) I was a momma’s boy, through and
through. I have a sister. I’m married with 2 teen daughters. At one point I
lived with my daughters, wife and her grandmother as well as 2 female dogs. I
had estrogen dripping down the walls.
Back in High School, I often had many
close friends that were girls. I was the guy who was the good listener. The
safe guy who girls would often talk to. Don’t get me wrong, I had guy friends
too. It’s just that I often had many friends that were girls.
Plus, some of my favorite authors are
women. I simply adore the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling. (Did anyone ever
ask her about creating an authentic male main character?) And I’m a big fan of
Nora Roberts and her alter ego JD Robb. (When I thought about using a pen name,
I had considered JD Vincent.) Not to mention authors like Janet Evanovich,
Tamie Hoag, Lisa Jackson, Angie Sage and so many others that I’ve read through
the years.
When you read Vision of Shadows, I hope
you don’t think though out the book, ‘hey this is pretty good for a male
author’s take on a female MC.’ Rather, I hope you just lose yourself in
Bristol’s story.
